Beim Plattenspieler tastet eine Metall-, Saphir- oder Diamantnadel oder seit den 1990er Jahren auch ein Laser (Laserplattenspieler) die Rille der Schallplatte ab. Der mechanische Tonabnehmer wandelt die geringfügigen Schwingungen der Nadel in schwache elektrische Ströme um, die entzerrt und verstärkt werden müssen, um ein Tonsignal wiedergeben zu können. Beim Abtasten mittels Laser wird das gewonnene Signal ebenfalls auf ausschließlich analogem Weg verarbeitet.
